Captain Cook Country Eskape Cottage was once a Ship builders house, and a famous master mariner once resided here. It over looks Whitby Marina and the River Esk and being a working fishing port there is always something going on. At the bottom of the front steps is The Middle Earth Tavern. Here the local fishermen meet before and after their trips. The Tavern also has some sort of entertainment on a Friday night. To your right is a newsagents/convenience stores, and a bit further on is 'The Moorings' fish and chip shop. Just five minutes walk from home and you will find yourself amid the hustle and bustle of Whitby. There is a lot to do, from looking for fossils on the sandy beaches to climbing the Kyber Pass to Cooks monument.
WHITBY is steeped in history and legend, one such legend still performed on each year, and involves the 'Penny Hedge' pictured opposite. | The Penny Hedge |
Keep walking along the cobbled Church Street where there are lots of novelty shops and museums, eventually leading to the 199 steps (not for the faint hearted). At the top are St. Mary's Church and Whitby's famous Abbey.
Of course Whitby is also where Bram Stoker wrote his famous novel 'Dracula', the full effect of which can be experienced at the "Dracula Experience" on the far side of the river by the amusement arcades. | |
